This was new technology once too

Background Information

History

We started in 2000 as a consultancy focussed on the wider implications of the Internet revolution for the way in which people and businesses communicate. As a consultancy we have advised on a wide range of issues and we continue to advise on strategy, technology and their commercial implications as well as providing expert technical consultancy.

In 2001 we began offering services from our Oxford Street data centre, convinced that, burst bubble or not, we were still at the very beginning of what this technology could do. We worked hard on building a business that is both proficient technically and in its ability to communicate with its clients. We found that everyone does not want the same solution, they want the solution that suits their needs, and so we built a flexible range of services.

In 2004 we opened our Docklands data centre - London 2 - where we continue to host most key systems although now across 3 separate data centres. London 2 is a full Tier 4 facility with the best connectivity in London and the infrastructure to support our uptime commitments.

In 2005 we began delivering our first integrated services, offering WAN and hosted systems as a single suite of products and combining technologies to deliver a service that exactly met each clients needs.

In 2006 we upgraded our core network and brought the Routing, Switching, Firewalling and Load Balancing all together into the core network. This allowed us to remove over a hundred network devices from client networks and reduce our our power consumption in Networking by 45%. It also meant huge increases in the flexibility and capacity of key network services. This was the change that got us looking at the improvements we could make throughout the systems we host and led eventually to UCS.

In 2007 we started developing Linux based virtual systems, over a hundred thousand pounds was spent on that first stage of development and it led to our first flexible virtual platform going live for Ebay in September 2007.

In 2008 We have launched UCS, a fully fledged enterprise utility computing platform. It delivers huge power and cooling benefits and is as a result we think the definition of Green computing. Best of al it does this as a by product of the creation of a platform which is as flexible and as powerful as is currently possible.

Key information

Us

Carrenza has specialised in the building and operation of hosted and managed data centre-based solutions since 2001.

We began offering data centre services convinced that, burst bubble or not, we were still at the very beginning of what this technology could do. We worked hard on building a business that is both proficient technically and in its ability to communicate with its clients.

We found that everyone does not want the same solution, they want the solution that suits their needs, so we focused on making flexible reliable systems designed and operated not to fail. Throughout the last seven years we have made sure we understand and use the latest technology, Research and development and training are all critical to our ability to deliver and succeed.

That is why in 2008 we are one of the first companies in the world to provide an enterprise utility computing platform, Carrenza UCS. A platform that delivers the benefits of this revolution in computing and understands the drawbacks and one which marries those technical elements with a compelling commercial model.

We are passionate about the environmental impacts of our industry, we were one of the founding members of the Green Technology Initiative back in 2007 and we continue to work to lower the impact on the environment of the systems we operate, UCS alone accounts for a server by server drop in power consumption of 65% and an improvement in cooling efficiencies of about 12%.

Our Team includes real experts in all the key technologies in use today as well as some of those which are the technologies of tomorrow. Our Engineering and consulting teams include Cisco, RedHat and Microsoft Architects and engineers trained and certified in products including VMWare, Oracle, Solaris and many more.

We back up our knowledge with industry leading policies on training and development, staff have access to a large Lab and are encouraged to spend at least 10% of their working time on Training, research and development. That all means we know the technologies you are using , however cutting edge and we can test them, build them ad try them before you have to use them in anger.

In all of this we have a simple goal: To give you peace of mind and the reassurance that your systems are being run by experts who actually care about what you are trying to do and who share your goals. That way you will understand how and why we can give you a 24x7 100% uptime guarantee and mean it.

Carrenza Wii Sport Challenge

We knew something had to be done to raise cash for the 2008 Sport Relief campaign, but we are not really your jogging in the rain sort of team so we had to look for a way of doing sport and staying warm dry and entertained.

Elaine who is in charge of this sort of clever idea suggested mounting a Wii sports challenge -  go-karts and wrestling were discarded – so a call to our friends at Nintendo and we had blagged the use of a swanky Wii Kiosk. More help from our Landlord,  who lent us the foyer and from the team at BD NTWK who look after Nintendo’s Direct Marketing  and we had a challenge. Have fun and raise money for Sport Relief all in without leaving the building!

It was a huge success, people came up with all manner of excuses for not being at their desks working hard, lunchbreaks stretched and we managed to raise over £600 and pulled muscles with over enthusiastic Wii boxing.

Sport Relief is a brilliant cause and a great way to raise money, we will be back next time round, but in the mean time you can always slip them a tenner or whatever you can manage, just pop over to http://donate.sportrelief.com with you card ready.
